Remembering Operation Cast Lead 4 Years Later

December 27, 2012 is the fourth anniversary of Operation Cast Lead, a 3-week armed conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israeli and Palestinian militants which started on December 27, 2008 and ended on January 18th 2009 in which 13 Israelis died and anywhere between 1,166 and 1,417 Palestinians died.

Now, let’s take a moment and look at those numbers again, 13 ISRAELIS AND ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1,166 and 1,417 PALESTINIANS.

13 verses anywhere between 1,166 and 1,417…
The fact that many people continue to call the Palestinians terrorists is absolutely disgusting and repulsive and it is quite clear that those who do choose to call the Palestinians terrorists are eating what many of the biased, false, racist, and ignorant news reports and channels are feeding them.

Operation Cast lead, which was the name given to the massacre by the Israeli Military, is also referred to as the Gaza War, Battle of al-Furqan, and the Gaza Massacre.

So what exactly happened during Operation Cast Lead, in which ONLY 13 ISRAELIS and anywhere between 1,166 and 1,417 PALESTINIANS DIED?

Israel had been planning for a military operation as early as six months before the conflict by collecting intelligence on potential and future targets. The Israeli Military partook in a disinformation campaign in which they gave Hamas a false sense of security, thus allowing the Israeli Military to take the Palestinians by surprise, thereby increasing militant casualties.

At 11:30 am on December 27th, 2008 Israel launched the campaign titled Operation Cast Lead. The massacre of innocent Palestinians began with airstrikes in which F-16 fighter jets and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters simultaneously struck 100 preplanned targets within a span of 220 seconds. Thirty minuters later, a second wave of 60 jets and helicopters struck an additional 60 targets. These air strikes hit Hamas headquarters, government offices and 24 police stations. An Israeli UAV airstike on the police headquarters of Gaza City killed 40 people, including police cadets at their graduation ceremony.

At least 225-230 Palestinians were killed and more than 700 injured on the first day of the air strikes, the deceased and injured included civilians and children. Human rights groups noted that the attacks began around the time children were leaving school. This Israeli attack was the deadliest one-day toll in 60 years of conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, a day that came to be called the Massacre of Black Saturday by Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told reporters that Israel would strike all targets associated with what she called the “illegitimate, terrorist government of Hamas.”

What I do not understand is how innocent children and civilians are associated with “illegitimate” terrorist governments. Israel will come up with the most pathetic excuses just to get away with the killing of Palestinians.

Hamas responded with a rocket barrage on Southern Israel, and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip kept Southern Israel under constant rocket fire during the entire war. Beersheba suffered two rocket attacks, the farthest Palestinian rockets had ever reached. Palestinian rocket fire killed three Israeli civilians and one soldier in the early days of the conflict.

What people must understand is that these rockets that Hamas retaliates with, in order to defend the Palestinians, are home made, cheap, and weak items of weaponry that do not cause much damage. Now, Israel recieves MILLIONS of dollars per day in military aid from the United States, therefore, are equipted with much fancier and sophisticated machinery used to kill innocent Palestinians who have home made rockets and rocks to defend themselves with.

In the weeks following the initial air raids Israeli F-16Is, AH-64 Apaches, and many other weapons of destruction continued to target Palestinian territories, killing thousands.

Quick timeline of major events during the massacre:

December 27: Israel begins assault on Gaza, codenamed “Operation Cast Lead”, by launching air raids that kill more than 225 Palestinians.

December 28: Israeli aircraft bomb the Islamic University in Gaza City and the length of the Gaza-Egypt border, taking out more than 40 tunnels used to smuggle vital goods to the strip.

December 29: Israeli air strikes hit the interior ministry in Gaza City as Israel declares a “closed military zone” around the Gaza strip.

December 30: Rockets fired from Palestinian positions kill three Israelis, taking the death toll from Palestinian rocket attacks to four since the beginning of the Israeli offensive.

January 3: As Israel begins its ground offensive in Gaza, at least 11 Palestinians, including one child, are killed after Israeli forces strike a mosque in the town of Beit Lahiya.

January 4: The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, pledges an additional $4.2 million of emergency aid for Gaza and calls on Israel to respect international law. An Israeli air strike hits two ambulances in Gaza, killing four paramedics.

January 5: Air and naval bombardments kill 45 Palestinians.

January 6: An Israeli strike on a UN school in the northern town of Jabaliya kills 43 Palestinians and injures at least 100 who had taken refuge inside the school… Once again allow us to keep in mind that Israel only targeted those who were involved in “illegitimate” terrorist activity…yet I’m still trying to understand how children at school are terrorists.
Israeli strikes hit two other schools, killing two in the southern town of Khan Younis and three in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City.

January 7: 11 Palestinians are killed by air strikes and shelling in Gaza City and in the north of the Strip. Also the first day of Israel’s “humanitarian cease fire.”

January 8: The UN’s refugee organisation in Gaza suspends all aid deliveries after an Israeli tank attacks a UN convoy, killing one Palestinian driver and injuring two other people.
Israeli bulldozers cross into Gaza and destroy a number of houses.
At least three rockets fired from Lebanon hit the northern Israeli town of Nahariya.
The UN Security Council passes resolution, with 14 votes in favour and only the US abstaining, that “stresses the urgency of and calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza”.

January 9: Israeli attacks continue in Gaza soon after passing of UN resolution, with a series of explosions and gunfire heard.
Six Palestinians reportedly killed in an air strike in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, raising the Palestinian death toll in Gaza to around 770, including more than 200 children, since the Israeli offensive began.

January 10: Israel drops leaflets on Gaza City warning of a “new phase” in its two-week-old offensive.
Eight family members are killed by an Israeli tank shell in Jabaliya, raising the Palestinian death toll in Gaza to 831 people.
Khalid Meshaal, the exiled political leader of Hamas, says that Israel must halt the Gaza offensive and lift the blockade before Hamas agrees to a ceasefire deal.

January 11: Israel is accused of firing white phosphorous bombs on densely-populated Gaza in violation of international law.

January 12: The toll rises to 935 Palestinians killed and 4,300 wounded. At least 25,000 people in Gaza are internally displaced but are unable to flee because crossing points remain closed.

Explosion in Gaza, January 12, 2009

Explosion in Gaza, January 12, 2009

January 13: Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, the president of the UN General Assembly, condemns the offensive and says the killing of Palestinians in Gaza amounts to “genocide”.

January 14: The number of Palestinians killed exceeds 1,000 as the UN’s aid agency in Gaza urges an end to the fighting, calling the war “a test of our humanity”.
Venezuela and Bolivia sever diplomatic ties with Israel, calling the onslaught on Gaza a “holocaust”. Bolivia pledges to get Israeli officials charged in the International Criminal Court with committing “genocide”.

January 15: Israeli shells hit a UN warehouse setting fire to tonnes of food and medical supplies, as well as three hospitals as troops advance into Gaza City.
The UN General Assembly accuses Israel of violating international law and targeting civilians in Gaza, and rebukes member-states for the lack of action over the crisis.

January 17: More than 50 air strikes are carried out in Gaza and heavy explosions are heard south of Gaza City.
Israeli warships and tanks enter the outskirts of Gaza City, keep lobbying shells into the densely populated urban area.
Fifteen Palestinians are killed in the Gaza Strip.
United Nations demands an investigation into an Israeli strike on a UN school in the northern town of Beit Lahiya. Two children, aged five and seven, are killed in the attack.

January 20: Amnesty International, the human rights group, accuses Israel of war crimes, saying its use of white phosphorus munitions in densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip was indiscriminate and illegal.

Due to the number of civilian casualties and the deteriorating humanitartian situation, Israel faced significant international pressure for a ceasfire, the establishment of a humanitarian corridor, access to the population of Gaza and the lifting of the blockade in order to bring humanitarian help the the Palestinians. On January 7th, 11 days before the end of the massacre, Israel opened a humanitarian corridor to allow the shipment of aid into Gaza. The Israeli army agreed to interrupt fighting for three hourse. Israel agreed to repeat the ceasefire either daily or every other day, an act that they attempted to use in order to make themselves seem “human”, which they are not, however, aid officials and the UN said it was not enough due to the fact that fighting ususally resumed immediately after the humanitarian ceasefires.

Israeli Military use of human shields and violations of international law

On March 24th, a report from the UN team responsible for the protection of children in war zones was realease, it found hundreds of violations of the rights of children and accused Israeli soldiers of using children as human shields, bulldozing a home with a woman and a child still inside, and shelling a building they had order civilians into a day earlier (the Samouni family, which I made a post about a while back). One case involved using an 11-year old boy as a human shield, forcing him to enter suspected building first, walk in front of soldiers who were being fired at, as well as inspect bags, the boy was also used as a human shield when Israeli soldiers came under fire. Three Palestinian brothers, aged 14, 15, and 16 also were used as human shields.

The UN fact-finding mission investigated four incidents in which Palestinian civilians were coerced, blindfolded, handcuffed and placed at gunpoint ordering them to enter houses ahead of Israeli soldiers. Some civilians were also questions under the threat of death or injury to release information about Palestinian combatans and tunnels, constituting a further violation of international humanitarian law.

Violations of the Israelis “were reported on a daily basis, too numerous to list” stated Radhika Coomaraswamy, a UN undersecretary general.

Many say that after the war Israel was victorias militarily, however, if you call the killing of innocent children a victory then you are a sick and disgusting human being and I suggest you go see a psychologist.

Let’s take a moment to remember the 352 innocent children killed in the Israeli massacre of Palestine.
These children had names and ages.
These children are martyrs, shaheeds.
